MARY RAPP [Cello] with Showa 44 and Folx

  • People's Republic of Australasia Sydney, 2000 Australia (map)

We return in November with a long-planned gathering of some of the most sublime improvisers in Australia together on the one night, featuring and arranged by the very extraordinary...

MARY RAPP
[Cello and Bass]
with SHOWA 44
[Carl Dewhurst and Simon Barker]
and FOLX
[Will Gilbert and Finn Ryan]

1st set: Mary Rapp with Showa 44

After studying Korean Pansori, Mary has been obsessed with developing her own song forms based in an improvisational context. Whilst playing cello and singing she is lucky enough to be joined tonight by Showa 44.  Featuring Carl Dewhurst and Simon Barker, Showa 44 utilise tuned metallic resonances, rhythmic densities and spontaneous invention via electric guitar and percussion to manifest compelling and evocative soundscapes. Showa 44 are recognized as one of Australia’s foremost creative ensembles.

2nd set: Folx

Folx is an improvising trio made up of three friends; Mary Rapp on double bass, Will Gilbert on trumpet and Finn Ryan on drumset. The music they perform is creative, free, joyous, and curious. Folx will be coming together to investigate song, rhythm, harmony, intervals, sounds. They don’t let each other get away with anything, always question, tease, mimic, and confront.

Mary Rapp is a multidisciplinary musician with a distinctive approach, which integrates jazz, experimental, classical, and regional music traditions. Mary’s work as both performer and composer is regularly featured in a range of ensemble settings such as Ensemble Offspring and the Australian Art Orchestra. She has performed nationally and internationally as a part of festivals such as the Sydney Festival and at venues such as the Opera House. Mary’s practice defies categorisation; indeed she works in the spaces between categories, genres, and cultures.

“electrifying one’s nervous system”. SMH
“an instinct for being taciturn and pithy; for making the music gossamer light or adding phenomenal weight and vigour, using extraordinarily few notes.” SMH
