24-Hour Choir

  • Sydney Observatory 1003 Upper Fort Street Millers Point, NSW, 2000 Australia (map)

To celebrate This is a Voice at the Powerhouse Museum, join Super Critical Mass‘s ‘citizens choir’ to sustain the human voice across an entire day and night.

Participants are encouraged to join in at any point to sustain the sound, creating an experience of harmony rather than dissonance. Or wander through the participants to experience the space in a whole new aural manner at this beautiful outdoor setting overlooking Sydney Harbour.

24-Hour Choir is a new work especially composed for This is a Voice by artists and composers Julian Day and Luke Jaaniste of Super Critical Mass (SCM). It brings together a diverse range of Sydneysiders to create a soundscape of voices. A large group of amateur choristers will sustain, across an entire day, a single specially-composed work created by artists collective Super Critical Mass. The duration of the work has a political echo of protest movements throughout Sydney in the 1970s and 1980s that sought to retain the architecture and social life of the inner city. SCM engages with this history and contemporary context, creating a work that recalls the past, but with a different outcome – an open, abstract sound mass that unites the many different cultural backgrounds of those who choose to participate, and celebrating their unique vocal architectures.
