Garageworks is a series of music nights at Bankstown Arts Centre celebrating musicians from the garages and studios of Western Sydney and beyond. 

Each event features a diverse cross section of performers from the local community and further afield loosely connected through experimentation across a range of genres.

Germ Studies

Germ Studies is the inspired Australian pairing of renowned pianist Chris Abrahams (The Necks) and harpist Clare Cooper – but if you're expecting a harmonic polyphony of harp and piano you'll be shocked by their alien landscapes. The unlikely combination of 1980s Japanese synth and 1380's Chinese harp creates an ambiguous and ambitious music. Although stemming from a language borne of contemporary electro-acoustic improvisation – Germ Studies approaches the path from a very different angle – filled with wonderful, ecstatic and unexpected joys.

The Splinter Orchestra

The Splinter Orchestra, formed in 2002, is a Sydney-based large-scale ensemble, consisting of a fluctuating number of members with various backgrounds: improvisation, jazz, classical, electronic, electro-acoustic, sound art, visual art, and environmental sound, acoustic ecology and field recording. Over the years, the Splinter Orchestra has become a social and artistic meeting point and a way to test and recalibrate one's own ideas.

Bonniesongs

For a peck of audiences in Australia over the past couple of years, Bonnie Stewart (Ireland) has been one of those subtly transcendent artists. Her lilting vocals float over gentle peaks of acoustic and electronic instruments, layered ethereally into what may be a moderately enchanted loop pedal. Under the spell of thrumming guitar, Stewart renders her arrangements with a fidelity of performance that seems to amplify an almost spectral presence.

Flower Boy

Born in Sydney to Chinese and Lebanese parents, Non Chalant aka flower boy 卓颖贤 paints delicate and emotional images with her classically-trained background combined with forward-thinking production. The past three years for flower boy 卓颖贤 has taken a natural trajectory, evolving into a project of self-expression that has culminated in sharing the stage with the likes of Marcus Whale and HTMLflowers and featuring as FBi Radio’s Independent Artist of the Week in June 2018. 

Zeadala

Zeadala is a musician who has been steadily making moves in Sydney’s music scene for the past 4 years. Her long awaited EP release features music influenced by her love of 90’s Hip Hop and R&B, as well as traditions of poetry and story-telling. As a mixed-raced third culture kid, Zeadala draws on her experiences growing up in Australia and navigating the Earth as a human to create melodies and lyrical content that speak of injustice, land, freedom and empowerment.

GETTING HERE

Bankstown Arts Centre is within five minutes' walking distance from Bankstown train station and bus interchange. Free four​ hour (4P) parking is available at the community carpark located along Olympic Parade. Also, Marion Street Carpark, Dale Lane Carpark, Brandon Avenue Carpark and Greenfield Parade Carpark are within walking distance to the Arts Centre.

Visitors with restricted mobility can enjoy all public spaces at the Arts Centre. Disabled parking is also available at Olympic Parade carpark.
