THIS WEEK:

Freya Schack-Arnott - Nykelharpe and cello

Ruben Palma - guicello

Noam Yaffe - hardanger fiddle

Mimi Kind - homemade rhythm machine and a new kinetic sculpture

The weird and wild Nykelharpe (bowed keyed fiddle) in the hands of virtuoso cellist Freya Schack-Arnott becomes a rediscovered instrument for new music. Together with Ruben Palma on his self-designed and completely original guitar and cello - literally two instruments in one, they perform Scandinavian traditional folk tunes intermixed with free improvisation and interventions performed by Mimi Kind on her rhythm machine - ‘an instrument built from an industrial-sized wood lathe. The Rhythm Machine looks like a giant music box (or some kind of mechanical sound-loom) and produces a hypnotic, textural music that spools out with a Gamelan-like quality’ (Limelight Magazine). Last but not least, the hardanger fiddle (a violin with four extra sympathetic strings) from the museum’s collection will be played by one of the best up and coming violinists in Australia, Noam Yaffe.

This exciting younger generation of musicians are joined later by veteran experimenter Jon Rose and his legendary Triple-neck, Double-piston Wheeling Violin.
