Nights at Tempe #22

  • Tempe Jets Holbeach Avenue Tempe, NSW, 2044 Australia (map)

Marco Cheng/Romy Caen/Bonnie Stewart
Clocks and Clouds
Sonya Holowell/ Elsen Price

Clocks and Clouds is comprised of core players and composers Kraig Grady and Terumi Narushima.
Their totally acoustic performances feature “mesotonal” tuned Vibraphone and Harmonium. These instruments - with their special pure harmonic tuning - explore the beauty of room resonances via ancient sacred scales and multi-dimensional geometries.

There once were two remarkably forward-thinking American composers- Harry Partch and John Cage. Though they had completely different musical philosophies, they each successfully invented new ways to use and appropriate Western music. Holowell and Price will be attempting to combine some of the concepts of Partch and Cage, despite the seeming incompatibilities.

Sonya Holowell is an Indigenous Australian vocalist, composer and writer working across new and experimental genres. The contexts for her work, and the forms they take, are diverse and deeply questioning. Her practice comprises interdisciplinary and cross-genre collaboration, improvisation, and conceptual composition. She is also a workshop facilitator, a curator of the Now Now Festival, and a writer, founder and editor of the recently born arts publication ADSR Zine.

Elsen Price (born 1989) is an Australian double bassist, composer and producer. Price has featured as a soloist at leading festivals and venues throughout Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Czech Republic. He collaborates regularly with leading Australian and international established and emerging artists, and lectures at leading music schools on the double bass. Price has recorded and composed for solo bass, ensembles and for film; highlights including 2019 solo bass release 'Descent of the Free' (ABC/Universal) and award-winning Australian independent film 'Dead Sunrise' (2016). As a performer, Price works as a soloist, collaborator, non-traditional Western performer and in re-purposing the double bass.
