Duo Debut of Two Icons, PETER KNIGHT & MARTIN NG at the Republic

  • The People's Republic Sydney, NSW, 2000 Australia (map)

It's always wonderful and fascinating to see
a new duo involving two masters of their musical practice, so next month
the People's Republic is thrilled to present...

PETER KNIGHT

& MARTIN NG

On SUNDAY 21st July

Commencing at 7.30 p.m. [doors at 7]

Peter Knight, Martin Ng

Solo-Solo-Duo

Peter Knight and Martin Ng have played together on many projects as part of the Australian Art Orchestra, which Peter directs. These include the AAO Alvin Lucier commission for the Melbourne Town Hall Grand Organ, 'Swing Bridge' (world premiere 2016), 'Sex, Lynch, and Video Games' (with Nicole Lizée 2017), Peter Knight’s work, ‘Diomira’ (2017) and two Austin Buckett commissions.

But this is the pair's first performance as a duo.

It will feature a cornucopia of analogue and digital technologies with Knight playing a solo for trumpet, Revox B77, and laptop. This will be followed by a rare solo performance by Ng on turntables and electronics. The concert will wind up with a duo performance combining these intriguing modalities.

Peter Knight

Peter Knight is a multidisciplinary musician who has gained wide acclaim for his distinctive approach, which integrates jazz, experimental, and world music traditions. Peter’s work as both performer and composer is regularly featured in a range of ensemble settings, he also composes for theatre, creates sound installations, and is the Artistic Director of one of Australia’s leading contemporary music ensembles, the AUSTRALIAN ART ORCHESTRA.
Perpetually curious, Peter’s practice defies categorisation; he works in the spaces between categories, between genres, and between cultures.
“Hard to categorise… hauntingly memorable” THE WIRE (UK)
“Falling into an utterly genre-less wormhole” CYCLIC DEFROST
“Honest, inventive and original” HOUR MAGAZINE (Montreal)
“Serious work of stringent originality” BBC JAZZ ON 3
“If trumpet is an element then Knight is an alchemist” NEW YORK CITY JAZZ RECORD

Martin Ng

Martin Ng is perhaps the most distinctive turntablist Australia has produced. He started playing turntables at the age of 15, working as a club DJ in the 80s, but his performing style was too radical for regular clubs, so he gave up conventional DJing in favour of experimental turntablism techniques.

Ng has collaborated with many artists, both live and in the studio. In 2001 he released an album with Mathias Gmachl (of Farmers Manual) on Mego label. Together with Martin Tétreault and Otomo Yoshihide he participated in 'Tuntable Hell' UK tour in 2002. For the NowNow Festival in Sydney in 2003, he organised The Vinyl Double Quartet - eight artists, including Cor Fuhler, Oren Ambarchi, Anthony Pateras and Lucas Abela, performing with turntables, all playing the same record, Ornette Coleman's Free Jazz. These recordings appear on the official festival compilation under the name Martin Ng Turntable Orchestra. Most recently he released a double vinyl album, The Vanishing, on Hospital Hill with Oren Ambarchi and Ensemble Offspring (2019).
