MEGAN ALICE CLUNE with Hinano Fujisaki and Nick Calligeros
SATURDAY December 6th at 7 p.m. [doors at 6.30]
Megan Alice Clune performs two new works for trio, featuring Hinano Fujisaki and Nick Calligeros. Based on looping video scores, this performance will be the third in her series of Repetition Studies performed throughout 2024-5. These works present frameworks for improvisation that unfold slowly, and can be observed from multiple viewpoints of complexity.
A meditation on listening in the digital age, Repetition Study III draws tension and familiarity, boredom and fascination, the ritualistic and the mundane into a strange loop.
Megan Alice Clune is a musician, artist and composer based on Gadigal and Wangal lands. Her work explores the dynamic relationship between music, technology, the body and temporality through composition, performance and installation. In recordings described as ‘breathtakingly intimate’, 'visionary ambient’, and a 'pristine exercise in precise simplicity', Megan delicately balances an elemental tonal palette that is both sparse and emotionally rich.
Originally trained as a classical clarinettist, Megan’s interest in conceptualism and the avant-garde led her to a pioneering practice that draws from unusual combinations of techniques and processes. A series of lessons with US composer La Monte Young in 2014, combined with her sustained interest in electronic and popular music, has resulted in a style of contemporary minimalism that makes Megan a sought-after collaborator. She creates music for a wide range of artforms, frequently working with leading Australian film-makers, visual artists and choreographers.
Over the past decade, Megan has presented work at major art institutions and experimental music venues across Australia, Asia and Europe. Her three critically acclaimed releases on experimental music labels Room40 and Longform Editions received praise from European, US and UK music publications. She has presented installation work at notable artist-run and internationally renowned commissioning platforms Firstdraft, Kaldor Public Art Projects’ Project 34, and 3331 Arts Chiyoda in Japan.
