D.C. CROSS Annual Xmas-Is-Over Show

  • The Red House Earlwood NSW 2206 (map)

It's that time again, bored with the post-Xmas malaise and craving some fine musical distraction, the Red House provides the solution with our annual celebration of the sublime solo guitar work of one of our great local artists, who will also be launching his new album...

D.C CROSS [solo guitar]
SUNDAY December 28th at 7 p.m. [doors at 6.30]

Partly an album launch (on limited edition CD format), for this show Darren will playing songs from his latest release D.C Cross - Open Guitar (Volume One) which sees our six-string virtuoso heading in a new direction with improvisational blissed out guitar cycles.

This new D.C Cross album Open Guitar explores the balance between dedicated practice, improvisation, emotion, and technique. Darren spent two months learning one of the songs here, while others were recorded in a single take. He's been trying to find the balance between a natural flow state and practiced methods... A bit like martial arts — you learn the moves, you practise the technique, and then when it comes to fighting, you hope it all comes out in a focused controlled anarchy.
Getting as far away as possible from the constraints of his previous influences, this is an attempt to be as open as possible on the guitar. Darren has used three main guitars here: a vintage Yamaha he bought off a guy at Woy Woy train station, a $12 unbranded flea-market guitar, and a hand-crafted luthier-made Opus acoustic from South Australia. He’s also been relaxed with recording methods this time — you can hear birds singing, neighbours shouting — it all adds to the openness.

Strange open tunings, twilight emotional states, river-like meditations… he hopes this album allows listeners to find 40 minutes of peace away from the bustling race to the top of the heap.

"Lightness of touch is present across Open Guitar, and that shows it comes from an artist very much in control of his craft. This is an album that feels open and honest; the emergency sirens briefly permeating the live recording of 'Ehrenfeld Summer Nights', which finishes the album, feel significant: there can be calm in chaos." - Klofmag
