PETER BRÖTZMANN [Germany] and HEATHER LEIGH [UK] at the Republic!

  • People's Republic Of Australasia Sydney, NSW 2000 Australia (map)

One man has been perhaps THE towering figure of European improvisation for 50 years, and if anyone had told me 9 years ago he might play here, I would have scoffed.  But with some disbelief, next month the Republic will EXCLUSIVELY present the man himself, in his current superb duo with another of the world's great improvisers.
For only the second (and probably final) time in Sydney...

Peter Brötzmann was first a visual artist, attending the Art Academy of Wuppertal. A self-taught saxophonist, he began playing with Dixieland bands beginning in 1959. In the early '60s, he became involved with the avant-garde Fluxus movement. He began plying free jazz around 1964; in 1965, he played in a group with the virtuoso bassist Peter Kowald and the Swedish drummer Sven-Åke Johansson. The next year he played with Michael Mantler and Carla Bley's band and became associated with Alexander Schlippenbach's Globe Unity Orchestra. In 1969 Brötzmann helped form FMP, a long-lived free jazz label and presenter that issues recordings and sponsors live performances. In the '70s, Brötzmann would play and record with pianist Fred van Hove, drummer Han Bennink, trumpeter Don Cherry, and trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff, among others. His circle of associates would continue to widen; in 1986 he would play (with drummer Ronald Shannon Jackson, guitarist Sonny Sharrock, and electric bassist/producer Bill Laswell) in Last Exit, a metal/free jazz group that enjoyed brief success. By the late '90s, one would be hard-pressed to name a prominent free jazz musician with whom Brötzmann had not played.

The daughter of a coal miner, weaving a trail from West Virginia to Texas and now residing in Scotland, Heather Leigh furthers the vast unexplored reaches of pedal steel guitar. Her playing is as physical as it is phantom, combining spontaneous compositions with a feel for the full interaction of flesh with hallucinatory power sources. With a rare combination of sensitivity and strength, Leigh’s steel mainlines sanctified slide guitar and deforms it using hypnotic tone-implosions, juggling walls of bleeding amp tone with choral vocal constructs and wrenching single note ascensions. In recent years, Heather has been touring the world extensively as a solo artist following the release of her studio album, ‘I Abused Animal’ and in  a duo with Peter Brötzmann, with whom she has released 2 albums, ‘Ears Are Filled With Wonder’ and ‘Sex Tape’ on Trost. A new BRÖTZMANN/LEIGH studio LP is forthcoming in 2018 and Heather is currently working on a new solo LP.
As well as Peter, Heather has played with an extraordinary range of musicians including Keiji Haino, Jandek, Toshinori Kondo, Simon Fisher Turner, Oren Ambarchi, Joe McPhee, the list goes on.
