TALISMANIC with PETER FONDA

  • The Red House Earlwood NSW 2206 (map)

Sometimes at the People's Republic we've seen a show somewhere and have loved it so much we think the acts in question have to play at the Red House, and that's the case with these two brilliant but elusive instrumental combos who we've lured to Earlwood to share the bill on the one night...

TALISMANIC
with
PETER FONDA

SUNDAY November 23rd at 7.30 p.m. [doors at 7]

talismanic   /tăl″ĭs-măn′ĭk, -ĭz-/
adjective

  1. Possessing or believed to possess magic power.

  2. Of or pertaining to a talisman; having the properties of a talisman, or preservative against evils by occult influence; magical.

Talismanic are like Link Wray meeting Krautrock on the Parramatta Road, and as far as glibnomers go – and despite soliciting an unperturbed giggle from the members of the band – it can’t be too far from the truth. But here's a couple of things which are indisputable about this fine Sydney band - they're all-instrumental, part-improvised, and a bunch of blokes originally from Adelaide with dubious interrelated pasts. Guitarists Jonny Gretsch [The Wasted Ones] and Tom Morton, bassist Lachlan Colquhoun and drummer Leigh Giles started jamming together a couple of years ago intending to fuse a motorik freeway groove with the stinging lead guitar punctuations of garage/rockabilly legend Gretsch, and a semi-experimental band organically emerged… exploring the spaces in space(-rock), leading to… where? Well, wherever the ebb and flow of shifting moods takes them, and audiences seem to love taking the trip too... - Clinton Walker

Caught like a wild dog in the guitar/bass/drums death trap, Peter Fonda were forced to gnaw off the trapped limb...

Their third album, "The Making of Thriller", documents Fonda's recent explorations of instruments unknown. A fast track between subconscious and witness, this is Fonda's 'jam as magickal ritual' captured in its most pure form yet. A gonzo selection of lo-fi ambient micro-soundtracks with extended visits to kraut, sampledelia, minimal techno and doom tropicana achieved with hive mind composition and low budget, one-mic-in-a-room fidelity. The meaning is in the act itself. Gone are the tense guitar-bass-drum blowout antics of the band's first two albums, replaced by the push and pull of vintage synths, tape machines, samplers and analog effects.
"The chimneys of our mind spitting out muck from city grime, part ecstasy and part nightmare. The meaning is in the doing. The punk rock seance. If the question is "How does this thing work?" then this becomes the thing to work with. Nobody knows what these buttons do. Control is relinquished. Somewhere in the failings, and errors, and squalls is a fleeting idea of something behind this mortal veil - a golden truth or at the very least a vaguely satisfying answer as to why we do what we do."
