Louis Wishart Quartet
Louis Wishart is a composer, trumpet player, and pianist whose music draws upon the ecologies of natural and synthetic situations to form linear structures for improvisation and fixed music.
Alongside Sam Killick (Guitar), Henry Hall (Bass), and Hayley Chan (Drums), Louis will present a brand new set of original compositions, developing his practice in aleatory, loop-based music and organic processes prominent in his concert music, proposed here as "primary territories" for open improvisation.
Drawing heavily on the music of Anthony Braxton and Morton Feldman, Louis' music attempts to supplant the progressional harmonic basis for improvisation with loops, collage structures, and specified degrees of interaction".
The DeeBeeTees
The DeeBeeTees (Doers of Brave Things) is the collaborative soundworld of two flutey friends, Chloe Chung and Liz Cheung, co-creating on Gadigal land. Their performances share their mutual enjoyment of candid multi-flute improvisation, sharing various snacks, and looping.
Chloe Chung is a multi-style flautist (Western flutes/dizi), whose recent collaborations include the Miss Saigon Asia tour (2024), “Sidere duo” flute and piano album with pianist-composer Pavle Cajic, and Rahil duo with oud player Maxeem Georges. A tapestry of influences shape her body of work, including her Malaysian-Singaporean-Chinese roots, traditional Chinese music, poetry and improvisation as a tool for building bridges of connection between people, places, and things.
Liz Cheung messes around with the skeletal structures of low flutes and Chinese traditional bowed strings, compiling the noises your teacher tells you not to make during lessons. They make curious sounds as a solo artist and in a diverse range of ensembles such as Adelante Tango sextet and Rorschach Climax Ensemble, and are an illustrator and musician in the Dreambox Collective.
