Spel: a play, a game; to exercise oneself in diversion, an amusement or recreation.
Vocalist Louisa Rankin and clarinettist Jason Noble come together as SPEL, a duo exploring the curious and abstract corners of fragile, playful, improvisatory music making. Following the release of their debut self-titled album, described as “a supremely human listening experience” (Jazz Valley), SPEL invite you to join them as their subtle, strange and soulful sounds unfold live in concert.
Louisa and Jason are joined by composer/producer Connor D’Netto for a trio performance expanding and contorting SPEL’s sound world with modular synthesisers and live electronic manipulation. Between, hear the world premiere of Connor’s Some Kinda Way, a three-movement work composed for Jason in which his solo clarinet line floats above and weaves through ten pre-recorded layers of himself. To begin the evening, Jason performs Steve Reich’s iconic piece for the same layered setup, New York Counterpoint.
