"Monday Night Confessions" is a weekly show presenting original jazz/improvised music. Run out of Church Street Studios in Camperdown, Sydney, we acknowledge the Gadigal people of the Eora nation, and pay our respects to their elders past, present and emerging.
14th July 2025 - featuring: Abi Lee & Alister Spence // Gabriella Hill Quartet
Abi Lee & Alister Spence
Abi Lee has been working with her mentor, Alister Spence who is a pianist, composer, and improviser based in Eora/Sydney. Inspired by Alister’s work and his collaboration with a Japanese pianist, Satoko Fuji, Abi and Alister together seek for freedom within structure in improvised music through musical games, words, and visual prompts. Drawing from the great four-hand collaborations such as Craig Taborn & Kris Davis, and Marilyn Crispell & Angelica Sanchez, Abi’s compositions celebrate the natural timbre of pianos and beauty in improvisation.

Gabriella Hill Quartet
Gabriella Hill Quartet improvise and play compositions. The music explores a range of sonic possibilities including textural densities, tension at different volumes and timbral combinations. Melodies and rhythmic archetypes are used as platforms for improvisation. Written components function as interchangeable pieces that can be rearranged to create frameworks in which improvisation is informed.
Gabriella Hill is an exciting and original new voice on the tenor saxophone. Her quartet provides an excellent vehicle for her explorations of the instrument and her complementary compositional approach. Gabriella, Cameron and Alex recently performed as a trio at the Dulwich Hill Relit Festival. For Monday Night Confessions, they will be joined by guitarist Eric Tsai.
