"Reflections from Home" is a testament to the enduring connection between First Nations people and the landscapes that have shaped their stories. Experience a night woven with threads of land, memory, and resilience, in an artistic tapestry that invites you to delve into the depths of First Nations' connections with home and heritage through the transformative power of the arts.

Curated by Wiradjuri woman and Sydney Conservatorium musicology lecturer Laura Case, our Cultural Advisor Kaleena Briggs-Smith and Backstage Music’s Artistic Director Lamorna Nightingale, Reflections of Home brings together a lineup of acclaimed First Nations artists, including Matthew Doyle, Ellatronix, Nicole Smede, and Josh Sly.

Join us for an evening of powerful storytelling, live music, and culture that flows from ancient tradition to contemporary expression. Opening the performance with a traditional song and dance featuring the yidaki, we then move through readings of live poetry layered with flute and looping electronics and two short films that bring to life the D’harawal story of Yandel’ora, offering a visual journey through ancestral knowledge. Continuing this thread, Nicole Smede’s creation Ngurraba (Home Place) featuring Sharlene Cruickshank’s spoken word poem, blends natural sounds, electronic loops, and text drawn from deep conversations with community against the projected backdrop of rolling waves,  shadowplay and nature.

The performance also includes time for a yarn between the artists and audience about developing culturally sensitive new work. We’ll discuss the how-to’s, challenges, and benefits for artists working with cultural knowledge based on the experience of the artists in the show.
