'Extreme Bodies to Virtual Selves: Sumo, Butoh, Robots and Avatars'

Bodies are unstable constructs, and in this age of excess, bodies appear as extreme embodiments. And with machine acceleration, sensory augmentation and cognitive computation, the body is amplified, and extended in its functions.

Stelarc’s workshop presents alternative anatomical architectures from hybrid bodies to hyper bodies. Through a discussion of social, cultural and philosophical ideas of the body, issues of awareness, agency and identity are interrogated. What a body is, how a body performs and what it means to be human is exposed. Having discussed these poetic and philosophical notions of bodily action and machine operation a one minute performance will be realised by participants taking into account how it will be structured, possible uses of the body, what kind of lighting and sound is incorporated and also how the performance will be documented.

This workshop is presented in partnership with Brand X through their Artist-2-Artist program.

LOCATION: 119 Bathurst St, Sydney NSW 2000

GETTING THERE: Driving/Rideshare: The nearest paid parking is Wilson Parking, located at 14 Wilmot St, Sydney. This is approximately 190 meters from the venue or a 3 minute walk. Train: The closest train stations to City of Sydney Creative Studios are Town Hall and Museum stations which are both approximately a 5 minute walk away. Bus: The closest bus stop to the venue is Museum Station (Stands C & D) on Elizabeth Street. They are both approximately 250 meters away or a 3 minute walk. Light Rail: The closest Light Rail Station is Town Hall, situated on both the L2 and L3 lines. This is approximately 160 meters or a 2 minute walk away from City of Sydney Creative Studios.

ACCESS PARKING: There is limited parking available for people with access requirements. These parking spots are on Level 2, Level 5 and Level 7 at the City of Sydney Creative Studios via 14 Wilmot Street, Sydney. There is lift access from all parking levels.
