Gary Daley, Lloyd Swanton, Kalon Captain

Australian Jazz icons Gary Daley (Bungarribee, The Catholics) and Lloyd Swanton (The Necks, The Catholics) are joined by emerging Jazz drummer and composer Kalon Captain for an evening of original compositions and free improvisation. Through the joy of pure spontaneity this ensemble will explore the spaces between ambient music and contemporary Jazz, transporting listeners into deep meditative soundscapes and undulating grooves.

Gary Daley is a highly respected Australian composer, pianist, accordionist and teacher from Springwood in NSW. Best known as a musician playing in some of the elite bands of Australian jazz; most notably, The Catholics. Gary’s projects have received glowing reviews and his music has been presented at major venues and festivals throughout Australia. He appears on many recordings featuring renowned Australian contemporary artists. He has toured nationally and internationally, most recently with Australian multi award winning world music ensemble, The Mara Big Band & Eishan ensemble. He is the recipient of two Australia Council for the Arts grants, new work and recording. In 2023 Gary’s quartet, Bungarribee, released the album, Hunger. It has garnered rave reviews & the band toured Tasmania as well as appearing at the Orange Jazz festival and other venues. A highlight of the year was the title track, Hunger, being chosen for performance at an ISCM New Music Festival in Europe. The piece was featured at the festival in the Faroe Islands in June 2024. In addition to performing, recording and touring Gary is the artistic director for the highly regarded concert series, Live at the Village in the NSW Blue Mountains, presenting premiere artists from around Australia & internationally,

Lloyd Swanton:
Bassist, composer, producer, bandleader, broadcaster, Lloyd’s credits include Bernie McGann, Vince Jones, The Dynamic Hepnotics, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Paul Capsis, Archie Roach, Mara! and Hamed Sadeghi. He appears on over a hundred albums, and leads The Catholics. Lloyd is best known as a member of The Necks, who have twenty-five albums released and have received multiple awards, including the Richard Gill Award for Distinguished Services to Australian Music. The Necks have toured the world constantly since 1998. Lloyd’s international artist credits include Nat Adderley, Jimmy Witherspoon, Barney Kessel, Sting, Sheila Jordan, Gary Bartz, Molly Ringwald, and (with The Necks): Brian Eno, Underworld, Swans, and the BBC Scottish Symphony. His producer credits include The Vampires with Lionel Loueke, ALLY, Phillip Johnston’s Coolerators, Max Alduca, all of The catholics’ albums, and co-producer of The Necks’ entire catalogue.

Kalon Captain:
Kalon Captain is a distinctive voice in the Sydney music scene, recognised for his creative work as both a drummer and composer. Through his deep exploration of jazz, hip-hop, and improvised music, Kalon has carved out a unique space that blurs genre boundaries and embraces experimentation. In addition to leading his own quintet, Kalon has performed as a key member of the afro/jazz outfit HAZTET, and has formed a trio with Gary Daley (The Catholics, Bungarribee) and Lloyd Swanton (The Catholics, The Necks), focusing primarily on free improvisation. Most recently, Kalon performed at the Kiama Jazz and Blues Festival and the Milton Jazz Festival alongside Hungarian flautist Dorka Foster (Hakumba). In April 2025, he co-released a new record under the moniker FIELDS with Yianni Adams (Kyoshi, Ella Haber), through the independent Sydney label CG Discs.
