Join us for a special screening of Limite (1931), an astonishing landmark of early Latin American cinema with a newly commissioned live score.
Directed by filmmaker Mário Peixoto at the age of 21, Limite has been acclaimed by the likes of Orson Welles and David Bowie. Three castaways share stories of their past lives while adrift on a lifeboat off the coast of Rio de Janeiro. Striking camera angles and flashbacks conjure a mood between dream and reality, a journey into the mind and out to sea. Described by legendary Brazilian filmmaker Glauber Rocha as the ‘Mona Lisa of our cinema’, Limite was scarcely seen in the decades following its premiere, existing as a legend until its belated restoration. Originally set to the music of Erik Satie, Claude Debussy and Igor Stravinsky, the film will be accompanied live by Worlds Only, a musical supergroup based between Sydney and Barcelona.
About the ensemble
