‘Oscillations in Place
Energy and matter in Tasmania’s Highland Plateau’
‘plateau oscillator’, 2025
8-channel natural materials oscillator - dolerite, quartzite, dirt, clay, sand, tarn water, rain water, alpine air, pencil pine wood, snow gum wood, tasmanian beech leaves, bone, glass, stainless steel, spark images, x-ray images, electronics. 1.3 x 2.2m
Until 20 Sep
“Within each of the materials there is a microscopic internal landscape that electricity traverses - internal landscapes where obstacles are negotiated and pathways found. As the electrical energy moves along and between the cells and crystals and suspended solids within matter, its motion and character is altered - each material imparts a specific character to the flow of electrical energy, adding distortion, harmonics, and altering the tone. Matter leaves behind an energetic residue within electricity - a distinct trace of its passing. These traces overlap and cycle as the oscillators play alongside one another, continuing conversations of exchange begun in the landscape - between water and rock, as erosion flowing into sedimentation and back - or between bone and dirt, as decay flowing into nourishment and back again. Back and forth, oscillating and cycling, folding over and into one another - an exchange of matter and energy across time.”
