For years, the People's Republic has been working with one of Australia's great singer/songwriters to find a date for a show to recreate one of the most wonderful records to emerge from Sydney in decades and we're thrilled to announce that this unique show is finally happening at the wonderful Living Room Theatre...
TOBY MARTIN
Songs From Northam Avenue
SUNDAY February 22nd at 7 p.m. [doors at 6.30]
In 2013, one of Australia's great songwriters, Toby Martin was approached by Bankstown-based performance curators Urban Theatre Projects to take part in a residency program at homes and businesses on Northam Avenue, a suburban street in southern Bankstown. Along with a coterie of visual artists, writers and choreographers, Toby was asked to “hang out and be in the neighbourhood. It was really just a space to think for two weeks”. This made Toby explore the neighbourhood, realise its uniqueness and get so inspired he wrote a whole album about it. He assembled a band of Arabic, Vietnamese and western musicians to try and capture the sonics/diversity of the place as they met in the front yards of local residents.
The album was released in 2017 and has been performed at Bankstown Live (for Sydney Festival), Carriageworks, Casula Powerhouse and the National Gallery of Victoria. We're thrilled to be able to offer our friends this rare opportunity to see the songs performed with the full band...
