Some years ago, we at the People's Republic became a huge fan of an extraordinary American guitarist after discovering her early albums on the legendary Mississippi Records, so we are more than excited to announce she'll be joining us for an exclusive Sydney show, this time at the wonderful Living Room Theatre...
MARISA ANDERSON [U.S.] Solo Guitar
WEDNESDAY February 25th at 7.30 p.m. [doors at 7]
Brilliant American guitarist Marisa Anderson is making her first solo tour of Australia this February.
Marisa's virtuoso technique on both electric and acoustic guitar is said to be derived from the American primitive style introduced by John Fahey in the 1960s, but her improvisations also mix influences from genres such as gospel, country, Appalachian folk and blues, jazz, circus music, minimalism, electronic, drone, and 20th century classical, as well as global styles such as Tuareg and Latin music. She channels the history of the guitar and stretches the boundaries of tradition. Her playing is fluid, emotional, and masterful, featuring compositions and improvisations that re-imagine the landscape of American music.
The New Yorker calls Anderson ‘one of the most distinctive guitar players of her generation’, and NPR refers to her as among ‘this era’s most powerful players’. Her music has been featured in Rolling Stone, NPR, The New York Times, Pitchfork, the BBC and The Wire. Festival appearances include Big Ears, Pitchfork Midwinter, Le Guess Who and the Copenhagen Jazz Festival.
In addition to her solo work, Marisa is best known for her recent work released by Thrill Jockey Records, including two duo discs with Australian drummer Jim White. Swallowtail, her second record with Jim, was released May 2024 and that year also saw the release of the feature film score ‘A Perfect Day For Caribou’ as well as appearances on records by Charlie Parr, Myriam Gendron and Big Brave. Past projects include 2021’s Lost Futures with guitarist William Tyler, and contributions to recordings by Matmos, Tara Jane O’Neil, Beth Ditto, Sharon Van Etten and Circuit Des Yeux, among others.
Marisa has toured and played live with numerous artists, including album collaborators Tashi Dorji, William Tyler and Jim White, as well as Yasmin Williams, Giorgos Xylouris, Ed Kuepper, Emmylou Harris, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Bill Callahan, and Thurston Moore.
Her current work is focused on a mid-20th century archive of recorded music from the Islamic world, Southeast Asia and the Soviet Union.
"I think about improvisation as a conversation... it's really just an art of being literate and expressive no matter what language you are in... I'm trying to be very present with the music and to make my intention realized with every performance... In performance, what changes is the dynamic in the room."
