AnSo

  • Phoenix Central Park 49 O'Connor Street Chippendale NSW 2008 (map)

AnSo, an interdisciplinary South Korean artist and performer residing and creating on Dharug land, blends their Korean culture with contemporary performance in their practice. As a self-described sculptor of sound, AnSo’s works delve into the intricacies of cultural and queer identity through sound, body, and vocal art. Their music lies in the experimental electronic realm, building worlds with field recording manipulations and vocal experimentation. Through dynamic performances, AnSo seeks to bridge the gap between tradition and modernity through experimentation and improvisation. The back-and-forth weave between Korean and English lyrics in their music highlights AnSo’s experience of diaspora and cultural loss.

AnSo's latest EP it's myself that i crave is a haunting quest for self-realisation which navigates cultural fragments – echoes of tradition and whispered identities in a poignant exploration of personal and collective transformation. In this 7-track EP, AnSo yearns to crave themself, however, is left with the realisation of the inherent complexity in truly understanding one’s own identity. As the EP unfolds, it becomes evident that the pursuit of self-awareness is not only a personal quest but also deeply intertwined with the longing for connection with others. The quest for self is met with the paradox of craving external validation and the challenge of reconciling personal desires with the broader cultural and societal narratives that shape our interactions. it's myself that i crave..... is it?

For this special performance at Phoenix Central Park, AnSo will be collaborating with harpist Isabella Rahme, as well as choreographers and movement artists Emmy Harkins, Risako Katsumata, Alana Searles, and Amara Shin
