The People's Republic is thrilled to welcome one of Australia's truly inspired and inspiring musicians to launch his new album and perform it live for the very first time, along with very special guests at the wonderful Living Room Theatre...

PETER KNIGHT with TYMBAL ECHOES [Simon Barker and Hinano Fujisaki]

SUNDAY March 15th at 7 p.m. [doors at 6.30]

Peter Knight is a composer, trumpeter, and producer who operates between genres, categories, and cultures. His solo work extends the possibilities of his instrument with innovative approaches that interweave acoustic preparations, extended techniques with electroacoustic processing via laptop, vintage delays, and tape machines. Peter is interested in the use of repetition, rhythmic overlapping, slow harmonic evolution, and subtle timbral evolutions to shift our perceptions of linear time. Well known as the former Artistic Director of the Australian Art Orchestra (2013–23), Peter commissioned over 100 works and collaborations with a diverse range of artists including Alvin Lucier, Senyawa, Nicole Lizée, Anthony Braxton, Erik Griswold, and Jules Reidy, and led performances by the company in over a dozen countries.

Peter’s new solo album, For a Moment the Sky Knew My Name, was recently released on ROOM40. It was produced by Lawrence English, and the extended title track features Peter’s son and rising young drummer, Quinn Knight. This is the premiere live performance of the work. Quinn and Peter also co-lead the quartet TL;DR which released its debut album last year, snagging an ARIA nomination and inclusion in the coveted NYC Jazz Record Top 10 releases of 2025.

To launch the album, tonight's performance features Peter Knight - trumpet/electronics/voice and Quinn Knight - drums/SPD/synthesiser

“Vividly painted panoramic scenes that capture the stillness and magic of the place while Knight’s trumpet meditates and muses with soulful, evocative expression. It is music that breathes as much as it flows.” Stationary Travels

More about Peter HERE and HERE

Tymbal Echoes is legendary drummer Simon Barker and phenomenal next generation saxophonist Hinano Fujisaki who first came together after reflecting on mesmeric experiences such as listening to cicadas and gurgling creeks, or sitting in front of a campfire. In conjunction with the granular possibilities of the Lyra 8, the music draws inspiration from these dense, knotty, intense yet very meditative and calming experiences. After multiple performances (and losing the Lyra 8), this project has morphed simply into an exploration of sounds and textures produced through a drum kit and a saxophone.
