Dual Attractor is Claire Edwardes’ seventh solo release and you are invited to her Dual Attractor album launch at Sydney’s hottest new venue, Machine Hall. In chaos theory, an attractor is a state towards which a system naturally evolves; a dual attractor suggests two such states - two centres of gravity pulling in different directions. Within thie show, those opposing forces manifest as the dialogue between performer and instrument: the distinct gravitational pull of the marimba and vibraphone, each holding its own essential place, and the broader tension between decades of creative practice and the unfolding unknowns of what lies ahead.

From the shimmering textures of Missy Mazzoli’s Orizzonte and the quiet, hymn-like glow of Caroline Shaw’s in manus tuas, to the surging energy of Kate Moore’s Joyful Melodies and the darkly playful twists of Gemma Peacocke’s I Promise Not to Poison You xoxo, each work on the album illuminates a different facet of these two cherished instruments. The title track for drums and electronics - created in collaboration with Paul Mac—captures the spark of creative exchange that has long defined this artist’s commissioning and collaborative practice.

As a follow-up to the 2022 solo album Rhythms of Change, Dual Attractor weaves together collaborations and bespoke new percussion solos that mark a significant point of arrival in a rich and evolving career. Spanning vibraphone, marimba, drums and electronics, these solo works - each by a female composer of international standing - showcase bold, imaginative voices. The project stands in deep gratitude to these composers for their openness, generosity, and trust in allowing their works to be reimagined.
